Voice Class Aria “Vittoria Mio Core” #sbsaa2021
Music: Giacomo Carissimi (1605-1674)
Words: Domenico Benigni (1596-1653)
An atypical Italian song, Vittoria, mio core! speaks not about the beauty of love and lover, but instead the victory of being freed from the clutches of an ungodly, deceitful woman! The song can also be sung by a woman about a lying man. This “victory” is echoed strongly in Carissimi’s march-like waltz with a tempo marking of Allegro con brio. Carissimi worked in Rome as a church singer and organist. He composed choral works as well as over 150 solo cantatas. Vittoria, mio core! is one of these cantatas

Voice Class Aria “O Cessate Di Piagarmi” #summer2021
“O Cessate Di Piagarmi” is from Scarlatti’s opera Pompeo written in 1683, the plot is based on ancient Roman history. The singer is Sesto, Sesto sings of his love for Issicratea, Queen of Pontus, living under house arrest in Rome.
What it means, basically: You’re colder than ice and you make me want to die.
From Il Pompeo, this little aria perfectly captures overwhelming sadness without being a total drag. Play it when your crush doesn’t text you back and you need to let those tears out.
Pietro Alessandro Gaspare Scarlatti (2 May 1660 – 22 October 1725) was an Italian Baroque composer, known especially for his operas and chamber cantatas. He is considered the most important representative of the Neapolitan school of opera. He was the father of two other composers.
