I had great fun today. ‘Twas forbidden fun in my first voice teacher’s book (that teacher was my dad.) Singer belting was a BIG NO NO in his world when I was learning how to sing. Basically, I was verboten from pushing the voice up in the chest voice with a flat soft palate.
So, in my formative singing years, I was singing “Voi Che Sapete” and learning the 24 Italian art songs while others were getting to belt all of the popular Annie tunes of the day and getting all the accolades. Nothing gets a crowd going more than a big loud chest voice holler. Carrie Underwood is one the greatest at this style.
Art song “My mother bids me bind my hair” never garnered quite the same reaction than the folks who belted “Fame” up to a C5 regardless of pitchy-ness. Who me bitter? ;-D
So my pastor asked for “Stand By Me” this morning as it connected to her sermon.
And I got to belt my face off in church in the contralto key. It felt really nice. Wheeee.
