We had an enjoyable summer jaunt exploring Youngstown before the new year begins. We visited a local winery and botanical gardens. The town history is very interesting. It seems like this town is rebuilding. We caught a wedding about to start at the gardens, Eliz added about 20 more geocaches, I got to go to my fave store Meijers, and we saw a Stephen King worthy house, usable for the Carrie White homestead. I’m happy to report that people were masked and distanced. I’m sad to report that only one place had postcards.
Things I learned:
1. Youngstown is half way between NYC and Chicago as well as half way between Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
2. It is in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains.
3. Railroads and steel made this town prosper.
4. Youngstown was the 5th largest city in the US in the 1920s. It was hit hard by the depression.
5. Before 1920, Youngstown had a diverse population of people from Lebanon to Italy. Martial law had to be called in for rash of kkk violence against ethnic groups in 1920s.
6. 60% of the population left in the 1970s when the steel industry was failing.
7. Mill creek park is the oldest park in Ohio and is in the national register of historic places.
8. Butler museum of American Art was the first of its kind in the US.
9. The Youngstown musical scene is vibrant with the symphony (in the spot of the former Warner Bros movie playhouse,) and the Covelli Center of the Arts.
