Tonight was a lemon pledge singing night. My choral straight tone “Oo” and Mozart requiem fugue patterns especially needed some full on dust busting.
It dawned on me how much dusting and achieving a choral blend have in common.
It was my first full rehearsal back at the cathedral (and without a mask) since March 2020 so it was time to get back in the saddle.
Capturing a blended vowel consistently with fellow choristers isn’t unlike life as a middle school student; coping with body changes, unexpected acne, and cliquey vowels that don’t always play nice.
I’m happy to say that I felt a thorough Rorem, Gjeilo, and Tallis cleanse and am ready to take them out for a spin.

Impure vowels: eat my dust!
Dusty vowels lead to dirty singing.
Don’t leave your voice in the dust, pure vowel pledge is a must.
