Today, I watched my voice student with admiration as she immediately tapped into deep emotions with just one text directive in her lesson. She said “I feel all of the feels. I feel all of the feels in others in too.” Feeling immediate emotions is a powerful character trait imo. I haven’t always felt all the feels. I was deeply sensitive but didn’t know how to express the buried emotions. I was numbly detached when my beloved Dad died suddenly. Tears followed his passing at random times. I remember passing out a month later after all was settled with the funeral. I continue to grieve his loss in waves 24 years later.
Perhaps it’s my Gen X roots. It wasn’t uncommon to hear statements such as “don’t cry” and “children should be seen but not heard” during my formative years. Plus (thank you, New Orleans), emotions became more immediate as my burgeoning bisexual slowly unveiled. It continues to this day to dawn on me in which culture has erroneously programmed me to be straight until proven gay.
