BACH LUTHERAN MASSES
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Lutheran mass was composed in parts, with the first section, the Missa, written in 1733 to seek patronage from the new Catholic Elector of Saxony. Bach later expanded and completed this work into the complete Mass in B Minor between 1748 and 1749, primarily using existing music from his cantatas in a technique called parody. The Mass was not performed in its entirety during Bach’s lifetime and was first published in 1845, with its first public performance in 1859.

BEETHOVEN MASS IN C
The C Major Mass was commissioned by Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy (II) to commemorate the name day of his wife, Marie von Liechtenstein. Beethoven’s motivation for writing it, then, was less related to his own religious feeling. Because of this, the style of this mass was similar to that of Haydn’s masses.

It was a great joy to sing the Trotta requiem with orchestra today. I’ve sung with some of the members of the cathedral choir for over 20 years now. It feels like musical family. #grateful

Feeling very grateful today for my muse.

I was an actor before I was a singer. As I have learned the opera singing craft, it has been precarious juggling legato, vocal position, and breath flow while honestly portraying the character in the moment as an actor. Each new opportunity challenges me to organically embed the music and drama.

My voice student who went to NYU for theater came to my Rusalka performance. He shared that he was earnestly impressed with my intentional, honest choices in this origin tale and appreciated my lack of histrionics that are typical for this type of character.

Another lovely moment was a screenshot sent to me by a parent of my 3rd grade student finding my Rusalka clip and exclaiming wow to my performance.

2. Review book of pasted musical excerpts.
3. Journal review of definitions and analysis.
4. 2 hr daily practicing with bird between jobs
5. Recall during commute, duty, and homilies.
6. 3am quiet bed review to calm nerves.
7. Staging review during downtime.

This week since our performance:

1. Sleepless nightowl brain; will o wisp mode.
2. Wore 2 different boots all day yesterday.
3. Phantom voice tells me to practice post show.
4. Grateful for supportive friends who came.

Loving, upbeat, funny, kind, clever, and thoughtful…..these are just a few words that come to mind when I think of my Uncle Brian. My US Marine Uncle has been supremely strong through many health challenges. I admire him and will never forget him. Our family will dearly miss him. I can only imagine the joy that came with today’s heavenly reunion with big Red, his big brother Bruce, and his parents/family who have gone before. Go rest high on that mountain, your work on earth is done, indeed. #grateful #family
