Rusalka Study: Dad

It’s change of venue today for Czech opera score learning as I make otherworldly sense of Rusalka’s cringy confession to Dad about her human obsession e.g. embracing the Prince while he bathes in his birthday suit. Papa fights with her very little and reacts basically with a běda and go find our resident wiccan Ježibaba in her hut. However Rusalka does reference that dear old Dad used to tell stories to the water nymphs about humans; he seems to have planted the seed. In other news, Wegmans is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. #operasinger #floppydiskmemory #rusalka #Dvořák

Singing Technique

These tenors brought the zhuzh in their lessons today. Patrick Petrone did a very respectable job on his Italian sans a few diphthong/recalcitrant flipped Rs. Brian Jamieson made strides releasing tension, connecting to the breath, and delivering the quote of the day: “When you ask me how it feels after it works well, it always feels less. Indeed. #voiceteacher #pedagogy #akintsucrooner

Singing Seurat

SINGING SEURAT 7.10.2025
Elizabeth Perryman #akintsucrooner
I’ve always been drawn to the Seurat “Sunday Afternoon” painting. His pointillist style of dotted patterns within a specific structure has always triggered my imagination. Learning how to sing over the years feels related to this painting style; complimentary strokes on a canvas cast by a village of voice teachers. Core technical tools I have accumulated from varied voice teachers include accessing breath flow through body freedom, vibrating authentic sound, evenly balancing head and chest voice, bel canto vowel clarity, and height of palate position. Every so often one of the integral patterns acquired from past voice teachers from my singer’s Seurat comes to the forefront. Yesterday my Mannes voice teacher Ruth Falcon paid an invisible visit as my voice student Linda Garcia and I worked on compression and lower/upper passaggio balance in tricky Massenet phrases. Ruth’s instructional approach could be curt to put it mildly but dagnabbit, after 2 years with Falcon and Anthony Manoli, I was able to separate my molars and stretch up like a champ. And yesterday this tool was the triage needed as Linda was able to release, connect more to her body, and find balanced placement. I count myself fortunate to have worked with gifted pedagogs since the onset of Material girl; from Jerry Daniels and Sarah Stedman to Patricia O’Neill, Alfonse Anderson, and Ruth Falcon. This kinstucrooner has fulfilled the slow boil that is a dramatic throat with all the precious lacquer compounds of their expertise. I am grateful to integrate and share their wisdom. #voiceteacher #seurat #pedagogy

“Like every other object on our planet, we are compiled of small pieces of the world around us. We are bits and pieces of the experiences of those before us, around us, and ourselves.” Grehan

Beyond life

My dad told a peer the year of his passing: “I’m not afraid of dying”. When we found this out, it really made me pause. If I’m being honest, I personally try not think of things too existential if at all possible. I seek as much earthly joy as I can muster. I appreciate the quote below.

“I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”

― Mark Twain, American author and humorist.

Voice Lesson

My voice student @thetacetmode continues to make strides negotiating the passagio, balancing his heavy/light registration, finding his most efficient embouchure, and accessing unefforted vocal production. Proud of this whippersnapper. #akintsucrooner #voiceteacher #pedagogy
