WAWA FOR THE WIN
Voice lessons:
- Often technical but some acquire solid technique through imagery.
- Filled with colorful vocabulary which may sound odd to vocal civilians.
- Becomes an emotional chapter 11 for many as we are our instrument case.
- Needs an open and fluid mindset throughout the seasons of life.
- Combines a magical mixture of the metaphysical and physiological.
- The more you learn, the more natural it sounds.
- Success may come from the sound of one’s favorite convenience store, WAWA.
Wait…..WHAT THE?
So yeah. Tonight my voice student and I worked on conjuring the dormant dark side of her Italian vowels. Little did we know when she spoke about her favorite wawa sandwich, the word “Wawa” would be a vocal elixir.
Technically speaking, we found more connection between her open and closed vowels through embouchure release, vowel modification, soft palate lift, and the implementation of the soprano vault (dome/inner oval/vomitato/bite the apple blah blah blah).
When this sharp collegiate (who is a joy to teach) sang in the space of saying the word wawa, her voice released and found more warmth.
My own voice teacher aka “voice whisperer” speaks of the hoot action which really resonated with right brained moi. This sensation and direction really helped my Italianate sound this past year.
All of this to say, discoveries can come from anywhere with an open mind. I have had a village of teachers who have filled my big throat tapestry bag with tools from ng to hoot action. I am grateful to have the opportunity to share.
