Doing the ragdoll is the ultimate body tension clear alt delete in singing…..

Tonight following Anthony Turner’s thoughtful and artistic recital I am pondering 2 things.
Firstly, I wanna be an artist like Anthony when I grow up.
And secondly, I thought of my singing decades thus far as embodying their own themes.
Years 4-10: Living la head voice loca
Years 11-20: Tale of 2 parallel registers
Years 21-30: Spinning diva or mucas life
Years 31-40: Erratic & traumatic spinto
Years 41-50: Less worry, more choices
Years 51-present: Becoming a big girl artist

PASSING OF TIME
(My non metric tale of time)
By Elizabeth Perryman 2.2.2024 #akintsucrooner
Time winds and moves.
The assessment of time defies translation.
Time fills space but meaningful moments transcend quantity.
Time that carries importance in our lives escapes linear measurement.
So, I asked my future wife when we first met what got her out of bed. I continued by asking her what stops her from slugging a curmudgeonly fellow traveler.
We laughed. We shared mutual intrigue. We became friends.
Now two decades later we are on the other side of smartphones, hurricanes, VR, Mayan calendar concern, touchless streaming, cake pops, I am Negan, and a Chicago Cub world series….
Our days in between have captured the joyful and jubilant, slow and sad, enchanting and existential, and mellow and mundane….
Lucky for me, my historical decision to swipe Elizabeth Honer’s garlic bread on our first date because in my childhood household it was well known that “ya gotta be quick” intrigued my future wife…
My current double nickel self seeks to work with time with more intention; time well spent includes finding a quality titleist driver to shoot the back nine.
So we spend our time relating, refreshing, rewinding, reformatting, relinquishing, recreating, rejoicing, rehabilitating, and rekindling.
In my case, time is rewarding when I am building a linguistic legoland.
My 2024 requires a snow globe shift to exhale collected triggers, trauma, and travails.
I remain an infinite student, grateful for the quality of time still ahead of me.

This morning, Billy Joel’s new song stopped me cold. I will always remember hearing “turn the lights back on” for the first time. Below are some musical pieces grabbed all my feels and stopped me in my tracks (you may get a chuckle out my random tastes:)
I will cherish these wonderful bruh-tastic notes/pics from 4 energetic youngsters because indeed (as a wise Dani Nudǝlman remarked,) life can vascilate between party vibes to a deep existential feels. Thank you Kendall Jae❤️🥹

Don’t mind me, I am currently transported back to my cherry blossom childhood bedroom writing my 1982 term paper. Billy Joel, you are a supremely prolific pop music prophet. #turnthelightsbackon @billyjoel
Billy Joel’s new song ❤️❤️❤️❤️
[Verse 1]
Please open the door
Nothing is different, we’ve been here before
Pacing these halls
Trying to talk over the silence
And pride sticks out its tongue
Laughs at the portrait that we’ve become
Stuck in a frame, unable to change
I was wrong
[Chorus]
I’m late, but I’m here right now
Though I used to be romantic
I forgot somehow
Time can make you blind
But I see you now
As we’re laying in the darkness
Did I wait too long
To turn the lights back on?
(Verse 2)
Herе, stuck on a hill
Outsiders inside the homе that we built
The cold settles in
It’s been a long winter of indifference
And maybe you love me, maybe you don’t
Maybe you’ll learn to, maybe you won’t
You’ve had enough, but I won’t give up
On you
[Chorus]
I’m late, but I’m here right now
And I’m tryin’ to find the magic
That we lost somehow
Maybe I was blind
But I see you now
As we’re laying in the darkness
Did I wait too long
To turn the lights back on?
(Outro)
I’m here right now
Yes, I’m here right now
Looking for forgiveness
I can see as we’re laying in the darkness
Yeah, as we’re laying in the darkness
Did I wait too long
To turn the lights back on?

Wouldn’t it amazing if one could take a few voice lessons and in no time, be able to easily wail on your favorite Barbra Streisand song. Alas, reality hits differently. Here’s the deal. Some songs are gonna feel like ambrosia on the throat. Other songs are going to feel like trying to sing with cords of sand paper. Depending on register, approach, vowels, vocal writing, length of phases, key, text etc, songs have their own code to crack. And some of us won’t have the combination regardless of work ethic. And that’s ok; frustrating perhaps but informative regarding how our voice actually should function.
So I’ve put together a quick and dirty songlist of tunes that are deceivingly hard to sing. Give them a try. Just do it. I triple dog dare you. How do they feel? Can you sing them standing on your head at any time of day? Or do you need to be wearing the right clothes, have eaten and drank with great discernment prior, and sing said tune at a certain time of day/barometric pressure/pollen count? Vocal writing is its own architecture and within the craft, it holds its own treasure trove of vocal pedagogy Easter eggs.
PS: All is never lost. Sometimes it’s a learning curve and a matter of age and tenacity.
Giddy up.

It’s the summer of 1978. I’m in my first theater production. I’m playing the part of Pinocchio in Act 2 when he goes to the land of the toys and becomes a donkey. I still remember the heavy and stuffy paper mache donkey head I wore. Even at 9, the energy of a live audience was galvanizing. Directing shows has been enjoyable over the years. I especially enjoyed incorporating those hips swivels in Litchfield’s grease circa 1991 Patrice Corso Lynne Kirby Taylor. This year, weather and conflicts haven’t been on our side. Luckily, today we were able to get most of our Pinocchio cast together/in costume for a solid 90 minute run thru on stage. The 3/4th grade kids are really starting to bring it. It’s big challenge especially getting the littles to think and react with agency on their feet but oh what a joy is it to see them rise. Grateful for family helpers. A special shout out to Liz Dinardi Disano Sherri Araujo Villamil and Chayne Marissa❤️. Thanks to LD, I was even treated to a delightful Ms P snack pack. 🥹 Time to slay! Let’s do this. #pinocchio #schoolplay
